Restriction of Hazardous Substances
Since November 2005 all the PCBs we have produced have been lead free, as part of overall RoHS compliance, as required by legislation since 1st July 2006.
The solder we are using is SN100C. This particular alloy of tin,
copper and nickel was chosen due to its proven record of over four
years use by some of the largest manufacturers in the world. It is
an alloy that is compatible with all other solder systems and so can
be used universally. The fact that it does not contain silver means
that it is far less aggressive than those that do. (see
www.dklmetals.co.uk for more details).
There are other finishes available but they were discounted, in the
case of immersion tin and silver, due to potential problems of
oxidation of the plated surface rendering them unsolderable over a
relatively short timescale if not kept airtight.
Nickel / Gold was also discounted for the majority of applications,
on the grounds of cost, but is still available if required. For
certain applications where tin / lead solder is necessary it is
still possible to specify this alloy as a finish on your printed
circuit boards.
